Sirius is pleased to report that one of its Directors, David Bangert, has just been awarded a history doctorate from the University of Portsmouth.  His PhD, Interrogating the Future: Imagining the Future of War in an Age of Change, 1870-1914, investigates the reasons why the vast majority of commentators failed to predict how the First World War would be fought.  David’s expertise in Operational Research (OR) and knowledge of contemporary Defence matters provided insights for the development of his PhD, including recognising the importance of one of the few visionaries to predict the War, Jean de Bloch, who wrote what can be considered to be the first work of OR at the dawn of the Twentieth Century.  David is aiming to present his findings on this pioneering work at an OR Conference in 2021.
